IN ALMOST perfect spring-like conditions appropriately named Isle of Wight athlete Matt Sharp won this year's annual Ryde 10-Mile run on Sunday.

Matt, from Cowes and a member of the Ryde Harriers, which organised the event, came in first in a time of 52mins 9secs — exactly three-and-a-half minutes ahead of his nearest rival, Salisbury's Harry Smith, and a further minute clear of Islander, Gary Marshall (56.40), also of Ryde Harriers.

Matt came second last year in 56.55.

Some 480 athletes — well representing Isle of Wight clubs and from as far afield as London — took part in the annual popular event.

The runners took on a tricky and demanding course that featured four major climbs — winding its way on a circular route from Ryde seafront, through Nettlestone, St Helens and Seaview.

Some of the notable Islanders to finish was Simon Pilcher, of Thorley, who came seventh in 58.19, Pete Young was the first M75 home in 1.16.09 and Roger Merry (both Ryde Harriers), was the first M70 home in 1.26.58.

The first woman home was Tessa McCormick (Vale Royal) in 58.23 and she came a superb eighth overall.

Charlie Metcalfe (Ryde Harriers) was the first Island woman to finish, coming fifth in 1.06.39.

The women's team event was won by Winchester and District Athletics Club.

The best Island team was with Ryde Harriers, who came fourth, and which comprised Charlie Metcalfe, Jodie Wilmott and Donna Drobina.
