THE top of the table clash between Ryde A and Newport Vics A was the match of the day in Division 1 of the Isle of Wight Table Tennis League last week.

Ryde’s Scott Lawson continued his unbeaten run this season — and without dropping a set.

His team-mates, Pat Thorley (pictured) and Rob Smith both won one each, while Vics' Dave Hilliam and Paul Freeborn were on form, winning two each.

The match rested on the doubles match, which Lawson and Smith won in four sets, to give Ryde a 6-4 victory.

Ryde C and Ryde B both had easy victories against Havenstreet A and B teams respectively, with Keith Baker the only Havenstreet player to win a game, for the A team, against Bryce Wilson of Ryde C.

Meanwhile, in Division 2, third-placed Ryde Revellers met Ryde Rangers in a closely fought contest, with the Revellers' Gourav Shah their player of the match, winning all his games, while team-mate, Nicola Turner, won two.

They also played together in the doubles, which they won in straight sets. The Rangers' Alan Dennis was on form with two wins, while junior, Zak Holbrook, won one, with the match finishing 7-3 to the Revellers.

Newport Vics B had an easy 9-1 win against Ryde Rockets, with Vics' Rob Warren and Dave Newnham — who jointly lead the Division 2 averages with 95 per cent win records — both won all their games.

In Division 3, Shorwell Saints had to fight all the way to gain a 6-4 victory over the Ryde Frogs, with the Frogs' Lindsay Harper the player of the match, winning all three games.

Ryde Apprentices’ junior player, Robert Pope, notched up a notable win against top-ranked Tom Flood, of St Lawrence Lizards, which was his team’s only win in a 9-1 defeat to the division's leaders.
