NEWPORT Vics B player Barry Joyce had quite an exhausting evening playing not only for his side, but also for the Vics A side in Division 1 of the Isle of Wight Table Tennis League after being called in as a substitute.

Joyce stepped in to play for Newport Vics A against Shanklin Skuas, while also playing for the B team at the same venue against Newport Vics C.

Joyce managed to win two out of three for the A team — losing to player of the match, Shanklin’s Graham Evans, who was undefeated all evening, including a doubles victory with team-mate Tom Waddell, as the match ended 6-4 to Vics, in fourth spot in Division 1.

Ryde’s A and C teams played a close match, with the A team’s Scott Lawson player of the match — undefeated in his singles games, while team-mate Mark Turner won two, losing to Alex Rorke in five sets.

Lawson was on the losing side in the doubles though, playing with Rob Smith against the C team’s Timothy Giles and Rorke, who won in three sets.

The match ended 6-4 to Ryde A, who stretch their lead at the top to 18 points over second placed Ryde D.

In Division 2, Newport Vics B’s Joyce continued his busy evening, winning all three in an easy victory over club-mates, Vics C.

However, the B team’s Dave Newnham lost his 100 win record to the C team’s Paul Lewis, who was in inspired form in a long five-setter.

The match ended 9-1 to Vics B, putting them 14 points clear at the top of the table.
Second placed Ryde Rascals had a hard match against Ryde Relatives, whose player of the match, Martin Dove, and his twin grandsons, Ethan and Joe Millward, also played well.

The twins were unlucky in their doubles match, which they lost in five sets to the Rascal’s' Peter Clarke and Steve Gibbons — but the Relatives won the match 6-4.

The St Lawrence Lizards and the Shorwell Spinners continue to dominate Division 3, with 10-0 and 8-2 victories respectively.

The Lizards lead the table by seven points.
