COWES completed an incredible last-minute comeback to claim all three points tonight (Tuesday, October 4), but Vics fell short against superior opposition in the Wessex Cup.

The Yachtsman faced fellow Premier League strugglers Laverstock and Ford at home, following their goalless draw with Portland United on Saturday.

Under the lights at Westwood Park, Laverstock had an early chance, striking the post from the edge of the box in the first minute.

Cowes had their chance to open the scoring at the 25th-minute mark after a long ball from Scott McFarlane was brought down by John McKie, who could not find the net from a tight angle.

The Yachtsman number one, Ed Hatt, was the busier of the two keepers in the first half, as both teams went into the break goalless.

Shortly after the break, Laverstock hit the post again, this time from a freekick.

At the 56th minute mark, Cowes had a golden opportunity to open the scoring after the Laverstock keeper hesitated, following a long ball by Conor White, but Eli Ahmed could not lift it over him.

Cowes would come to regret this, as Laverstock took the lead just past the hour mark.

Right at the death, the Yachtsman found a goal through John MCKIE, after a sweeping move by Cowes, bringing the score level as the clock hit 90.

But there was to be even more late drama, as Scott McFarlane’s cross was met beautifully by MCKIE, who won the game for Cowes in stoppage time, sealing three crucial points.

East Cowes Vics clashed with high-flying Premier League side Fareham Town, at Beatrice Avenue, in the second round of the Wessex Cup.

Vics, who started the game third bottom in Division 1, went into the match with confidence after earning a point away at fifth place Verwood Town on Saturday.

The Island side started well, putting the ball into the back of the net on the 15-minute-mark, only to find the linesman’s flag raised.

Sadly that was as close as Vics came, conceding one goal in the first half and another in the second.

East Cowes bow out of the Wessex Cup in the second round but will look to lift spirits as they face Ash United in Division 1 at home on Saturday.
