TWO OF the Isle of Wight's Wessex League sides have important games this evening (Tuesday).

Cowes Sports entertain fellow Premier League strugglers Laverstock and Ford at Westwood Park — another six-pointer at home following their goalless draw at home to Portland United on Saturday.

Yachtsmen keeper Ed Hatt, who made his 400th appearance for the club that day, was the difference between the two sides in a relatively poor game.

Laverstock and Ford were promoted from Division 1 last season — beating Newport in the play-off final at Smallbrook.

Just across the River Medina, East Cowes Vics entertain high-flying Premier side Fareham Town, at Beatrice Avenue, in the second round of the Wessex League Cup.

Fareham are managed by former England and Arsenal star, Graham Rix, who managed Portsmouth for a spell.

Vics, third bottom of Division 1, go into the game with confidence after earning a point away at fifth place Verwood Town on Saturday.

Their manager, Richie Woodburn, who took Vics to the quarter finals of the competition last season, is under no illusions about the task ahead of his side this evening.

"The cup draw has not been kind to us. We are the only Island side left in the competition, but it won't be easy," said Woodburn.

"We have some players returning to the side, so they can get some minutes on the pitch, ahead of an important league game against Ash United on Saturday.

"Our attitude will be to go for it. Fareham won't want to travel to East Cowes — and we'll make it as competitive as we can."

Both games kick off at 7.45pm.
