SANDOWN-SHANKLIN 10K
A RECORD 157 athletes gathered at Yaverland for this year’s Sandown to Shanklin 10km race, promoted by MCC Promotions.

On a flat seafront route, with a turnabout at 5km at the end of Shanklin Esplanade Ryde Harriers athlete Matt Sharp hit the front from the gun and was never to be beaten — finishing comfortably in 33mins 10secs.

Behind Sharp, Cowes-based Chris Newnham had a battle with Ryde Harriers Simon Pilcher, coming out on top in 34.07 to Simon’s 34.46 to complete the top three.

Ryde Harriers dominated the women’s race, with Holly Newton securing victory in a swift 38.34, which bodes well as she prepares for the London Marathon on October 3.

Relative newcomer to athletics, Carly Scoble, recorded a 40.47 PB for second, with Trish Train third in 42.42.

In the Vet50 category, Trish easily took top spot. Matt Fletcher, of Ryde Harriers, finished in 41.23 to take the men’s Vet50.

Ryde Harriers veteran, Pete Young, 75, ran an excellent 44.51 to finish in 21st in the men’s race.

The next edition of the event will be on September 17 next year.
