VENTNOR moved to the top of Division 1 of the Southern Premier League after Will Mew became the hero with the ball — helping to skittle out shellshocked Basingstoke and North Hants for an easy nine-wicket victory.

The match was wrapped up within the space of two hours at Steephill on Saturday.
The visitors were bowled out for a paltry 65 runs in quick time, as Mew spearheaded the Ventnor attack, returning a superb 5-7.

Well supported by the other bowlers, Charlie Calloway got in on the act with 2-10.
Dineth Thimodya made sure the game was won easily with a classy 40 not out, well supported by Sam Mills (18 not out).

In Division 1 of the Hampshire League, Ryde remain rooted to the bottom following their defeat at home to Portsmouth II by 33 runs.

The visitors amassed a decent 263-8, with Ben Gregory and Julion Jayerajah both returning 3-52.

In reply, Ryde battled hard, but came up short, bowled out for 230, with Ben Shannon top scoring (82).

Shanklin and Godshill’s 100 per cent winning start ended with a 104-run defeat at Bashley (Rydal) III.

The home team posted a reachable 194-8, with Callum Wright (3-36) and club stalwart Andy White (2-18) the pick of the Island bowlers.

However, Shanklin struggled to get going and were bowled out for just 90 — Wright providing resistance with 41.

In Division 4 (South), Ryde II had a bad day at the office away at Calmore Sports III, losing by seven wickets.

After being reduced to 76 all out, Calmore reached their target quite comfortably.

Ventnor II slipped to third with their first defeat of the season, by 23 runs, at Hythe and Dibden II.

The home side amassed a competitive 260-9, with Toby Noyes (4-50) and Sam Guerin (3-30) performing well with the ball for Ventnor.

The Islanders made it a contest, with Noyes (57), Ben Davies (56) and Jack Powell (45) playing well, but the support they had just came up short.

Meanwhile, in Division 2 of the Island League, Ryde II beat Newport II by four wickets in a low scoring game.

Ryde bowled well to skittle Newport out for just 106, with Manu Mohanan scoring 36 of them, with Mark Tuckwell (2-8 ) the stand-out bowler.

In reply, Lee Hailes hit 53 runs before retiring not out as Ryde reached their target with an unconvincing 108-6. Manuel Mangalan (2-18) was Newport’s best bowler.

There were runs galore in Ventnor III’s 77-run victory over Northwood II.

Ventnor smashed their way to 278-4, with Mark Price hitting 103 not out, well supported by Gary Cooper (73) and Souvek Sanyal (38). 

The win puts Ventnor at the top of the table.
