WITH the racing season drawing to a close, four Isle of Wight fanciers sent pigeons to Coutances in Northern France to compete in British International Championships’ Club Young Bird National — achieving excellent results.

The competition, for pigeons bred this year, saw 1,569 birds released at 9.50am to race over the English Channel.

The first bird to reach the Island belonged to Trevor Hazell, of Apse Heath, who clocked in at 12.11pm for the 111-mile trip, travelling at 1,379ypm (yards per minute), to come 57th nationally and 17th in the Central South section.

He was closely followed by Seaview’s Wayne and Roy Seager’s bird, who came 61st and 19th in the same section with a velocity of 1,371ypm.

Next home was Lee and Maureen Dyer’s bird in 92nd and 40th in the section with a speed of 1,249ypm.

Meanwhile, Medina North Road Club’s chairman, Trevor Willis, capped an outstanding season by not only timing in the club’s first five pigeons, but also topping the Southampton North Road Federation with the top three from 420 competing birds in Buckingham.

The last race of the season for the young birds was from a distance of almost 97 miles to Trevor’s loft in Niton.

With a brisk wind behind them, his first three pigeons were clocked in within three seconds of each other, flying the distance in 1hr 34mins, at an average speed of 61.5mph.

This now closes the racing season for all of the Island’s fanciers, who have had an outstanding season in races from the north of England and across the English Channel, from France, with Trevor’s result a great way to cap it off.
