THE Isle of Wight Community Club’s Indoor Bowls Club in Cowes got to play its finals days before the government began to enforce draconian virus measures, but for the Isle of Wight Indoor Bowls Club, they must wait until next season to do the same.
The Isle of Wight Community Club’s finals weekend concluded a long, exciting season.
It got underway with the triples, where John and Terry Crews, with Martin Butchers, held off strong competition from Myles Farrington, Viv Jenkins and Keith Gosden, to win 20–13.
In the Australian pairs, Paul Allo and Brian Knowles were involved in a tight game against Steve Lewis and Dave Gustar, runing out 17–13 winners.
The men’s four wood singles took place between Lewis and John Crews.
In a very close, excellent contest, which went down to the final wood, Lewis won it to take the title 21–19.
In the Plate singles, Steve Morris proved to be the stronger bowls player against David Dawson, winning comfortably by 21–9.
The opening day’s play ended with a great game of mixed pairs — John and Debbie Crews against Martin and Denise Butchers.
Although this was John Crews’s third game of the day, he had the confidence to take the match 25–15, although it had been close until the final few ends.
The second day’s matches began with the fours final.
Lewis, Gustar, Knowles and Ray Byham proved to be too strong for Terry and John Crews, Butchers and Myles Farrington, winning 29–6.
In the ladies’ singles, Debbie Crews showed her skills to overpower Claire Lamplough to win 21–6.
Frank Chatfield also proved to be the stronger bowls player in the two-wood singles final, beating Knowles 18-14.
The finals weekend was completed with the men’s pairs — Lewis and Byham winning the tightest of matches against Butchers and John Crews 16–15.
IW Indoor Bowls Club semi-final matches were played before the Covid-19 restrictions — but that was the last action this season.
With all play now ceased, club competitions this season will not be concluded until the start of the next — a situation unprecedented in the history of indoor bowls on the Island.
In the open fours, Richard Jeffery, John Carrett, Peter Furmidge and Ron Leleux enjoyed a comfortable 25-7 victory over Geoff Clement’s quartet.
Meanwhile, in the men’s over-60’s singles, Ian Morey qualified for the final, beating Mark Morris 21-14, after he had taken control in the latter stages.
The club played the Melton Mowbray President’s Team in a friendly match and ran out 110-77 winners.
