SHANKLIN goalkeeper Jack Powell was transformed from first half villain to penalty shoot-out hero to help his side reach the semi-finals of the Hampshire FA Trophy.

The Islanders ended the match 1-1 against a decent Clanfield side.

Shanklin took the lead on 15 minutes through a Jake Wright shot, but they conceded a soft equaliser on the stroke of half-time when a cross from the dead ball line into the box was finished from five yards after Powell hesitated.

But Powell came into his own in the sudden death shoot-out, saving three penalties to help Shanklin go through 3-2 on penalties.

They join Brading Town in the semi-finals and will face Fareham Reserves at home.

In the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier, Cowes Sports put in another plucky performance away at Freham Town, but lost 3-2.

The Yachtsmen led on five minutes when new signing, Jared Wetherick, turned his marker and scored.

Cowes survived the ball coming back off the bar to go in a goal up at the break.

But Gareth Bricknell was the culprit in conceding a penalty and Fareham levelled.

Fareham led from the spot, but Cowes equalised through Ji Nash.

Cowes thought they had led, but the referee controversially chalked it off.

The Islanders deserved a point, but conceded a third to return with nothing and remain second bottom.

In Division 1 of the Sydenhams Wessex League, Newport continued their superb, free-scoring form away from home, with a 7-0 thrashing of bottom side, Folland Sports.

A Connor Kelly penalty opened the scoring on three minutes, with Jordan Browne finishing off a headed effort from Joe Craig, which came back off the post for 2-0 on eight minutes.

Craig made it 3-0 on 14 minutes and that's how it stayed until the interval.

Further strikes were added by Jacob Reynolds, Mark Taylor, another from Craig and the seventh from Jared Cousins.

East Cowes Vics were soundly beaten, 4-1 against Andover New Street at Beatrice Avenue.

In Division 1 of the Harwoods Renault Island League, Whitecroft and Barton Sports humiliated local rivals Pan Sports 13-0, while Brading Town picked up three valuable points away at Cowes Sports Reserves with a 2-1 away win to keep up the pressure on W&B.
