NEWPORT remain the leaders of the Leslies Motors Island Cricket League following their comfortable six-wicket win over Cowes at the Isle of Wight Community Club on Saturday.

One of only two Island League fixtures to be played, Cowes were always up against it after losing the toss and being put into bat.

Jack Summers (31) top scored, but wickets tumbled on a regular basis, with Cowes only able to muster 112 all out.

Man of the match, Newport skipper Ash Brett (5-41), bowled supremely well.

After Newport were reduced to 60-4 and looking to be in some trouble during their chase, an unbeaten 54 from Brett saw the defending champions home.

Sam Cooke bowled well for Cowes, taking 3-46.

Northwood I entertained Shanklin and Godshill II in the other game.

The visitors batted first, but effective bowling from Callum Witham (4-25) and Liam Roberts (3-23) had them on the ropes until Jim Thorne gave them hope by hitting 69 to steer his side to 157 all out.

Northwood lost three early wickets, but a good partnership between Roberts (88) and Graham Holder (20 not out) helped steer the home side to a five-wicket victory.

Norton Mew returned figures of 3-43 for Shanklin and Godshill.

Northwood II and Bembridge could not raise sides against Arreton and Freshwater respectively, so their fixtures were called off.
