THE Island’s leading golfers made an impact at this year’s Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands Amateur Championship.

Although no Islander won the individual player’s title, three of Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club’s (SSGC) members — Jordan Sundborg, Conor Richards and Nat Riddett — won the team event.

Jordan, who won the title in 2017, was knocked out at the quarter-final stage, as he was last year, at Aldershot’s Army Golf Course last weekend.

The match went to four extra holes, with the seventh-seeded Islander, who had been two up with seven to play, and who led again after 14 holes, forced a play-off after county captain, Colin Roope, three-putted on the 18th.

But when the Stirling University student, who won the British Universities and Colleges Sport Order of Merit in March, hit a greenside bunker, it was all over.

Conor, a Hampshire first-teamer, was knocked out in qualifying by ex-footballer Paul Telfer, who played for Saints, Leeds, Coventry City and Celtic.

Conor also won the Hunt Salver, for best U21 score with his two 69s, and the Green Cup, for the top handicap score in qualifying.

Jordan and Conor’s scores, backed up by a 78 and 72 from SSGC’s Nat Riddett, gave them a five-shot win over Stoneham — and a place in September’s English Champion Club Tournament.
