A NUMBER of Isle of Wight athletes descended on the Dorset and Wiltshire border to compete in this year’s Larmer Tree Races.
The meeting featured five different runs — a ten-miler, an eight-mile night run, a 20-miler, and half and full marathons.
In the first day of competition, Trevor McAlister (1.21.41) was the fastest Ryde Harrier in the ten-mile race, coming a superb fifth overall, with Jane Andrew (2.22.46) the first to finish for the Isle of Wight Road Runners (IWRR).
The half marathon followed, with IWRR’s Nick Kenney finishing 19th in 1.56.56, knocking three minutes off last year’s time, despite having just recovered from collarbone surgery, while Harrier Richard Melville (1.58.01) came 22nd overall.
The next day, in the marathon, IWRR’s Stuart Backhouse stormed through it to come fourth (3.44.29).
IWRR’s Tarnia Butler (3.49.44) knocked 13 minutes off her course PB in the 20-miler, with Carolyn Ward and Keith Ruth (both 4.35.05) the leading Harriers.
In the Dark 8 run at night, teacher Sam Cleare (1.31.47) beat fellow Harrier Rosie Eldridge by a second and Elaine Parry and McAlister by two.
