IN its 75th anniversary this year, Newport and District Rifle Club got their 2019 season off to a cracking start with their annual Albion Cup competition.

The rapid fire contest, held at the the West Wight’s Newtown Range, saw Paul Johnson win gold comfortably.

Competitors used centre fire rifles at 200 yards.

Johnson’s nearest challengers were Simon Toogood (silver) and Lewis Beare (bronze).

Meanwhile, at the Sainham Range, Godshill, there was a large turnout for the first pistol calibre rifle competition of the year, the Ward Platter.

In a close contest, Jim Schofield won with a score of 349 out of 400, with Ian Lockhart second (345) and Sam Keery (343) third.

Shooters were challenged with precision shooting, followed by a round of three-second turning targets.
