TWO talented teenage boxers from the Isle of Wight who train at Newport Phoenix Amateur Boxing Club were inspired to win their bouts the day after fellow former club member Chez Nihell claimed a debut pro win at London’s O2 arena.
Jack Murphy, 17, and Luke Chessell, 15, travelled to Oxford to take part in competitive bouts against local fighters.
Jack, a sixth form student at Ryde Academy, beat Brandon May on a unanimous decision.
“He took control from the centre of the ring with fast counter-punches to head and body, which kept his opponent at bay,” said Newport head coach Mike Voisey.
“Jack kept his winning run going — never letting his opponent get on top. A well deserved win.”
Next up, making his debut in the ring, was Luke, who attends Carisbrooke College.
Up against Matvejs Kincen, Luke used his long reach to good effect, scoring well with his cleaner shots to take a split decision win.
Isle of Wight-born Chez, who started at Newport Phoenix as a boy, said: “It’s great to hear two of the club’s lads won the day after my bout.
“When I was a young lad at that gym, former pro and sparring partner, Jay Morris, and my dad, Asa, were my inspirations and, if I can return that favour to young boxers where I once was, that really means something.
“Success isn’t success until it’s given back.”
