THERE were plenty of eye-catching individual and team performances across all three divisions of the Isle of Wight Table Tennis League.

In Division 1, the match of the week was between Newport Vics A and B.

Island Games star Danny Burns turned out for Vics B and won all his games with ease, but Vics A’s Dave Hilliam and Paul Freeborn got the better of the B team’s Dave Newnham and Sean Joyce.

Vics B’s young player, Joyce, gained a notable victory against Ricky Lock with a great effort over four sets.

Burns joined Joyce for Vics B to convincingly beat Paul and Dave Hilliam in the pairs game to end the match as a draw.

Ryde A whitewashed Ryde Run of the Mill, not helped by being a player short, 10-0, to put them top of the league by 16 points over Shanklin Piranhas, who have two games in hand.

Ryde Raiders had an excellent 8-2 win when they locked horns with the Rookley Rhinos.

Only two matches were played in Division 2, which featured a clash at the top between Havenstreet Hooters and Shanklin B — a close match with Hooters player Alan Hulbert winning all his games in straight sets.

The Hooters swept aside Shanklin in the pairs match to win 6-4 — an emphatic three-set victory for Hulbert and Kevin Gattrell — to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Ryde Peers player Ian Loosemore showed his quality in winning all his games against Newport Vics C, which included one against Vics’ top performer Trevor Percival, to keep his position at the top of the players’ averages.

Percival did win his other two matches and joined with Richard Jackson to take the pairs for Vics in five sets, but the match ended 7-3 to the Peers to move up to second place in the table, leap-frogging Shanklin B.

The match of the week in Division 3 was between second place contenders Ryde Rookies and the more senior Ryde Rustics.

Alan Hopkins won his three games for the Rustics in their 6-4 victory.

Newport Vics D cruised to a 9-1 win over Ryde Revellers, with most games very closely contested.

The Revellers’ Alan Burch was unlucky against the Vics’ Debbie Yates and Chris Gordine who both played out of their skins in their five-set encounters with Hopkins, to both edge their games at the end.

Gordine and Roger West also took the pairs match in five sets to keep Vics securely in second position in the table, eight points above their closest rivals, the Rookies.

Wootton Wolves player Trevor Jones had a good night against leaders Ryde Rockers, beating Spike Hughes and Bert Paice, but the Rockers’ Neil Blake won all three matches to keep the Rockers top of the league standings.
