A brave police constable who had her legs crushed by a dangerous driver is preparing to take part in a 10km event to raise money for charity.

Pc Claire Bond was crushed against a fence and dragged along the ground by a BMW driven by drug-dealer Gurajdeep Malhi as the banned driver desperately tried to flee from police.

The Staffordshire Police officer believed she was going to die as the incident unfolded in Coton Fields, Stafford, in September last year, not far from where runners were taking part in a 10km road race.

She was pulled to safety by colleague Pc Dave Mullins, as Malhi drove at her once more.

Pc Bond said she had feared for the safety of the people taking part in the race, as she acted.

Malhi, 26, of Charnley Road, Stafford, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and conspiracy to supply Class A drugs, during hearings at Stafford Crown Court.

He was jailed for 12 years and nine months, earlier this month.

Pc Bond, who is facing a long road to recovery, has now signed up to take part in the Stafford 10K – the same event that had been taking place the day she was hurt.

Alongside her will be husband Darren and Pc Mullins.

She will be raising money for charity Care of Police Survivors (Cops).

Explaining why she had decided to sign up in a statement released through the force, she said: “I suffered life-changing injuries and, after three operations and treatment, I am finally trying to move forward with both my physical and mental recovery.

“Now the sentencing has taken place, my focus is on my recovery.

“I may not be able to walk the entire 10K, but as long as I can get up and walk the last kilometre on my feet and cross the finish line with Dave I will be happy.

Superintendent Carl Ratcliffe, of Staffordshire Police, said: “It’s great to see that Claire is at the stage in her recovery where she can take part in the Stafford 10K and typically, she is putting others before herself in taking part to raise funds for such a worthwhile cause.

“Claire continues to make us all feel proud of her determination and courage. We can’t wait to see her cross the finishing line.”
