THE 1986 film Jean de Florette (PG), starring Gérard Depardieu, will be shown by Ryde Film Club on Monday.

The club will be at their new venue, Ryde Academy, which has parking and disabled access.

Directed by Claude Berri, Jean de Florette is set in 1920s Provence. A former tax collector brings his family from the city to farm a smallholding, however two locals connive at underhandedness, wanting his land for themselves, and Jean is forced to work like a dog. Starts 7.45pm

At Ryde Commodore on Tuesday, is Down to Earth (U).

Leaving the rat race behind, a family of five embarks on the journey of a lifetime. They travel the ends of the earth searching for a new perspective on life.

There will be two screenings — a matinee at 3.30pm and an evening showing at 7.30pm. Tickets are available in advance at Splash, Union Street, or on the door.

Ventnor Film Society is showing a film from Iceland, Under the Tree (15), at 7.30pm on both Tuesday and Wednesday at Ventnor Arts Club.

In Reykjavik, a man is accused of adultery and forced to move in with his parents. While he fights for custody of his four-year-old daughter, he gets sucked into a dispute between his parents and their neighbours over an old and beautiful tree.

What starts as a spat between suburban neighbours unexpectedly and violently spirals out of control. Expect darkly funny, sometimes macabre Icelandic noir.

Ventnor Arts Club has a club screening on Thursday at 7.30pm — the Japanese subtitled film Shoplifters (15).

After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. The family looks after her and they live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets.
