Isle of Wight lifeboat crews have paid tribute following the death of a "much-loved" RNLI crew member at a station on the mainland.
Hastings RNLI, in East Sussex, announced yesterday (Thursday) that one of its crew had died following a medical incident at its lifeboat station on Wednesday evening.
Announcing the death, the station said: “We are devastated that one of our much-loved crew members died following a medical incident at Hastings RNLI lifeboat station.
“Please respect our privacy, and that of our family and friends, at this awful time.”
Tributes have since been paid from across the lifeboat community, including by rescue crews on the Island.
Ryde Inshore Rescue, an independent lifeboat service, said its thoughts were with the Hastings crew and the family and friends of the person who died.
A spokesperson said: “As a fellow volunteer lifeboat service, we know the dedication, commitment and camaraderie that exists within a lifeboat crew, and we can only imagine the shock and sadness being felt by everyone at Hastings RNLI at this incredibly difficult time.
“From all of us at Ryde Inshore Rescue, our deepest condolences go to their family, friends and fellow crew members.”
Yarmouth RNLI also joined those paying tribute.
The West Wight team said: “Our condolences go to all our friends and colleagues at RNLI Hastings Lifeboat Station on the sad death of a member of crew.
“Our thoughts and prayers go to all at Hastings, and the friends and family of the crew member.”
