More than 200 members of Girlguiding IW enjoyed a special day out at Blackgang Chine.

The event was organised by Island Commissioner Wendy Macklin and the MGR Team.

All sections attended with leaders, and several members were seen in the new uniforms introduced by Girlguiding during the summer.

The girls and leaders participated in a range of activities and rides, with a mass picnic lunch offering an opportunity to socialise and make new friends from across the Island.

Popular attractions included train rides, water slides, Cowboy Town, and the dinosaurs.

However, for older girls, 'Extinction' was a favourite, with its spinning and turning upside down eliciting loud screams.

A part of the day's proceedings was dedicated to recognising the achievements of a leader.

Tessa Bryson, from the Carisbrooke area, was honoured for earning the Queen's Guide Award.

Tessa, who began her Girlguiding journey as a young member, progressed to become a guide, ranger, and young leader, eventually taking on the role of a leader.

In this capacity, she has gained several qualifications.

The Queen's Guide Award is one of the highest achievements within Girlguiding.

Tessa completed her challenges while managing or assisting in running local units.

One such challenge included a residential stay at Pax Lodge, a Girlguiding Centre in London, where she explored London and collaborated with other Girlguiding members from across the UK.

Other challenges involved gathering information and delivering a presentation on mental health services available on the Island, obtaining qualifications to take other Girlguiding members for stays and camps, learning Italian, planning an international event, and working with others to update the national scheme for Girlguiding's Young Leaders.

Wendy Macklin, Girlguiding's IW Commissioner, presented Tessa with her Queen's Guide Badge and certificate, and County President Susan Biss also presented Tessa with her 'Going Away With' certificate.

As 2026 marks 80 years of the Queen's Guide Award, the Island commissioner is reaching out to those who have achieved this top award, either on the Island or elsewhere, to join in the celebrations.
