A TEN year old Isle of Wight swimmer is closing in on a remarkable fundraising double after raising more than £1,900 for Comic Relief and climbing to second place on a nationwide leaderboard.

Madelyn Bowden has spent the whole of September putting in the hard yards in the pool, swimming an impressive 17.8km — more than 11 miles — as part of her challenge to support the charity.

Her efforts have so far generated £1,931 in donations, leaving her just £69 short of her ambitious £2,000 target.

The young swimmer's achievement has earned her second place nationally, and supporters are now being urged to help her make one final push to the top of the standings before the fundraising campaign comes to an end on Friday, October 9.

How you can support Madelyn's Comic Relief fundraiser

Residents and businesses wishing to support Madelyn's final push towards her target can donate via her fundraising page at Madelyn's Comic Relief fundraiser.

Madelyn's mum, Emma, said was delighted and proud to see her daughter's commitment throughout the month-long challenge.

"Madelyn has worked so hard every single session this month — putting in lap-after-lap to make a difference," Emma said.

"To see her in second place nationwide is amazing, but reaching £2,000 and taking that top spot over a team would mean the world to her — and keep the Isle of Wight firmly on the fundraising map.

"Every pound counts, and any support from local residents and businesses would make a huge difference."

Money raised through the challenge will go directly to Comic Relief — helping fund projects in the UK and overseas tackling poverty, supporting mental health initiatives and assisting vulnerable communities.

The campaign also highlights the benefits of swimming.
