Firefighters tackle car fire at Isle of Wight Tesco store

Emergency services were called to the supermarket's car park shortly at lunchtime following reports of a vehicle on fire at the rear of the site.

Crews from Hampshire and IW Fire and Rescue Service remain at the scene, where smoke can still be seen rising from the vehicle.

The car has been extensively damaged, with only the burnt-out shell remaining.

Half of the Tesco car park has been cordoned off while firefighters continue to make the scene safe and deal with the aftermath of the blaze.

An eye-witness at the scene told the County Press that most customers got their cars out of the area, but a few are still stuck inside the closed section.

Despite the incident, the Tesco store remains open to customers.

A spokesperson from the Hampshire and IW Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called shortly before 1pm following reports of a vehicle fire in a car park off Afton Road.

"Crews arrived on scene and used a hose reel jet to put out the fire," the spokesperson added.

"They then carried out checks to ensure the area was safe before returning to station at approximately 2pm."
