The Isle of Wight Met Service has reported temperatures soaring above 39 degrees on the Island today (Wednesday, June 24) as a heatwave gripped the UK.
Data collected by the local forecasters from weather stations and mobile monitoring equipment shows highs of 39.3 degrees in Northwood as the hottest on the Island.
Temperatures recorded in Carisbrooke, Newport, East Cowes and Cowes were also reported to be above 38 degrees.
The IW Met Service compared and corroborated data and while a handful of stations read higher than the air temperature, the forecaster said, the 'vast majority were within half a degree' of their own measurements.

Although not offical Met Office readings, the local forecaster has a 'high level of confidence' in the data and observed that high readings were clustered together, giving further credence to the collections.
Due to the current heatwave, the Island is in the area of an amber 'extreme heat' warning issued by the Met Office and a red heat health alert from the UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA).
People are urged to follow guidance, including not completing strenuous activity between 11am and 3pm, drinking plenty of fluids and checking in on vulnerable people.
