ISLE of Wight firefighters dealt with a "wasteland fire" in East Cowes this afternoon (Wednesday).

At around 5pm, crews were called to the scene on Maresfield Road.

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said the fire measured approximately two metres by two metres and involved wood and pallets.

Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze using a hose reel jet before returning to station at 5.40pm.

Around two hours earlier, fire crews were alerted to an incident in Ryde.

They were called to Well Street, where they found it was a false alarm.
