Isle of Wight man charged over 'serious assault' in Newport

A 27-year-old man has been charged following an alleged serious assault on the Isle of Wight earlier this week.

Hampshire and IW Constabulary were alerted at around midday on Tuesday, June 9, to reports that a man in his 50s had been assaulted.

It was said the man had received injuries to his head on Melbourne Street in Newport.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment and is currently recovering at home.

Following a thorough investigation, officers have now arrested and charged a man in connection with the alleged incident.

Ian Harry Willett, 27, of Newport Road in Ventnor, has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm (GBH), robbery, and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Mr Willett has been remanded to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court today (Saturday, June 13).
