An upcoming road closure for Openreach works has been announced for Leeson Road in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, but residents have been left wondering if it will actually happen this time.

Conflicting information has left residents scratching their heads in recent weeks, with multiple signs warning motorists of road closures that never happened.

The confusion started in early May with apparently overlapping schedules from Wightfibre, BT Openreach and Island Roads, with different closure times listed on OneNetwork, Southern Vectis service updates and Island Roads signage.

OneNetwork listed Wightfibre roadworks from May 5 to 7, with traffic control using two-way signals.

However, the service status from Southern Vectis indicated Leeson Road - the main route between Ventnor and Shanklin - would be completely closed from 6.30pm to 11pm on May 5.

OneNetwork stated BT Openreach was to replace a pole from May 7 to 11, with the route closed 'all the time'.

Meanwhile, a traffic sign placed on Leeson Road several weeks beforehand warned the road would be closed at night only, between May 7 and 11 for the same Openreach works.

However, this conflicted again with Southern Vectis' service status, which said Leeson Road would be shut between 8am and 6pm on May 10.

The days passed with no closures - but plenty of questions about it on social media from confused residents.

Then, new signs went up, warning of a road closure for three days from June 7.

The County Press tried to clarify if this was actually happening, to no avail.

Again, the signs were left in place but the road never closed.

Clarification came through this week, from Island Roads.

A spokesperson said: "Work to replace a telegraph pole will be taking place at this location in Leeson Road under a one-day road closure, at a time between June 23 and June 25.

"Signs that were initially put out in error by the utility company have now been removed."

One still remains in place, however, at the Landslip Car Park.

Leeson Road suffered a near year long closure after a major landslide in Bonchurch in December 2023.
