Meet the people behind the Isle of Wight wellbeing shop which has served customers in Newport town centre for nearly 50 years.

Dragonfly, on St James's Street in Newport, is run by Julie Jones-Evans after her mother, Dianne, set up the shop in 1979.

Julie's family have been trading on the street since 1947 and in Newport since the 1790s, so Dragonfly is part of a long lineage of shopkeeping.

The shop has an extensive range of crystals, jewellery, essential oils and more products associated with wellness - all to help customers explore their spirituality.

Julie, well-known as a local councillor, said: "We’re on the alternative side of life. It’s about exploring something a bit different.

"We try to bring beautiful products to people as well. Our jewellery is real silver and we have real crystals.

"It’s about empowering the self. They are not magic in themselves, but they focus intention and create an atmosphere. It’s about what you put in."

Dragonfly attracts a range of customers, including visitors from the mainland and younger people due to its proximity to The Island VI Form - but also kids spending their pocket money.

Julie said: "If they get £5 of pocket money, they can buy a couple of things in here. Entry level self exploration, they don’t have to go and meet a yogi or go on an expensive retreat!"

For those wishing to start in the world of crystals and wellness, Julie said no appointment is needed and staff will be happy to make recommendations.

Julie runs the shop alongside her work as a county councillor and is supported by Emma, Andrea and her son Harri - who has been involved with the business throughout his life.

Julie is passionate about Newport businesses and is proud to carry on her family history on the street.

She said: "There are lots of pressures running a small business, but these businesses give a place a character.

"People come back and see that you are still here. That connection is lovely.

"We are a village up here and it's a strong connection. It feels like I should carry it on."

Dragonfly is at 80 St James's Street, Newport.
