STRONG winds of up to 55mph are set to batter the Isle of Wight this afternoon and into the evening (Wednesday), following several days of unsettled and, at times, stormy weather.
The Isle of Wight Met Service has a weather advisory in place, with forecaster Jamie Russell warning a spell of gusty conditions will sweep across the Island through the afternoon, in effect from 12 noon.
The strongest winds are expected along exposed coasts and higher ground in the west and south, though gusts will also affect The Solent and more sheltered inland areas.
The latest conditions come after a run of changeable weather across the Island, with recent days bringing periods of heavy, thundery showers and blustery spells.
Residents are being urged to take care, with the potential for falling debris, including twigs and small branches on roads and walkways.
There is also a risk of damage to garden furniture, particularly in exposed locations, while large waves are likely to build along western and southern coastlines.
Disruption is possible for those travelling, especially on cross-Solent routes, where delays or cancellations may occur due to the windy conditions.
People are advised to secure loose items and remain cautious when out and about during the advisory period, currently until 8pm.
