A severe weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with forecasters warning of possible flooding overnight.
Local forecaster IW Met Service issued the alert this morning (Monday, June 1), warning that spells of rain will develop across the Island from 8pm tonight through to 5am tomorrow (Tuesday, June 2).
Some of the downpours are expected to be torrential and possibly thundery, with between 20mm and 30mm of rain forecast to fall in a relatively short period.
The warning also highlights a risk of flash flooding, particularly in areas known to be prone to surface water issues.
Drivers are also being warned to take extra care, with large areas of standing water likely to develop on roads, creating hazardous conditions.
In rural parts of the Island, there is also a risk of soil, shingle and debris being washed onto roads and footpaths.
There are further concerns that polluted stormwater could impact the Island’s beaches following the heavy rainfall.
Residents are advised to remain alert to rapidly changing conditions and plan journeys carefully during the warning period.
