With Ryde residents recently at a loss over the state of George Street, here, through the wonderful medium of photography, we take a look at its history – by going back over 100 years.
As you can see, quite a lot has changed in the last century or so.

All the plates were taken by William Hogg, who ran George Street sub–Post Office at the bottom of George Street.

He also produced and sold photo postcards of all the streets and landmarks in Ryde.
The photos all date from approximately 1908 to 1918.
As previously reported, Ryde residents have had enough of George Street’s problems and want solutions.
Rubbish sacks are regularly dumped on the pavement all week, there are vermin fears, an ‘eyesore’ Royal York Hotel, and cracks across the road.
A group of locals aired their frustrations back in February.
While praising waste operatives for doing a “heroic job” trying to sort stuff out, one resident described the situation as “insanitary”.
