Art auction to raise funds for Freshwater skatepark project

Freshwater Parish Council has launched the creative fundraiser to support its plan for a new facility in Freshwater, blending art, sport, and community engagement.

As part of the initiative, artists have transformed blank skateboard decks into original artwork, which will be auctioned online to raise funds for the scheme.

The project also pays tribute to the Island’s skateboarding heritage, with a public exhibition set to celebrate former skating hotspots like Shide Ramp and Golden Hill Skatepark alongside the decorated decks.

Kirsty Gibson, clerk for Freshwater Parish Council, said: "This project is about more than just fundraising – it’s about bringing the community together, celebrating the Island’s skateboarding heritage, and creating a facility that everyone can enjoy.

"With the support of local artists and The National Lottery, we are closer than ever to making the skatepark a reality."

The completed boards will be displayed at a launch event on April 2 at Newport and Carisbrooke Community Centre, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

The online auction will run from April 1 to May 9.

The skatepark project recently received a £20,000 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund, helping bring funding targets within reach.

The parish council hopes to begin construction within 12 months.

Among the artists involved is Jenni Harrison, who created a deck titled The Madness of King George (A Tribute to The Brighton Pavilion).

Ms Harrison, who recently moved to Seaview from Dorset, is known for her mandala and kaleidoscopic artwork.

Her design features gold-toned mandalas and ‘flower of life’ motifs, inspired by the ornate music room of the Brighton Pavilion.

Artist Sienna Anderson, an award-winning Isle of Wight photographer, contributed a design titled Feeling Koi, reflecting her narrative visual style and creative sensibility.

The skatepark will serve skaters, riders, young people, families, and the wider community.
