Andy Clayton, Ryde:
As a resident of George Street, I was pleased to see that I am not alone in finding the state of it deplorable (CP 27-02-26).
The sacks of refuse left out on the railings are like some kind of reverse bunting.
I'm willing to bet that it wasn't always like this. So, what has changed?
Well, for one, there would once have been a weekly refuse collection.
Perhaps that could be resumed for areas like George Street where gull-proof sacks have to be deployed.
Secondly, I suspect that residents in the past would have been ashamed to allow their street to be in such a state.
They would have felt a sense of responsibility, a sense of pride in their environment.
