Another flood alert has been issued for the Eastern Yar amid a yellow weather warning for heavy, persistent rain forecast for the Isle of Wight tomorrow (Wednesday, February 18).
The Environment Agency says that flooding is possible tomorrow as “a lot of rain is forecast,” with river levels already elevated in parts of Sandown and Alverstone.
Flooding is currently affecting Golf Links Road in Sandown and Morton Common Road in Brading, the Environment Agency reports.
The agency has warned that ditches around Fort Holiday Park in Sandown will “struggle to drain” while river levels remain high.
If heavy rain affects the Eastern Yar, further flooding could hit low-lying land, roads, and cycle tracks and footpaths.
At Langbridge and Alverstone, the river is expected to run close to full, with garden flooding at Nicholas Close, of Morton Road in Brading, described as “possible.”
The Environment Agency said it is checking rivers for blockages and operating the Bembridge sluices to help manage water levels.
Residents, particularly in Alverstone, are being advised to consider activating any flood protection measures they have in place.
The flood alert comes as forecasters predict a prolonged spell of heavy rain.
Island forecaster, the IW Met Service, has issued a severe weather warning for heavy, persistent rain, with some areas seeing 20-30mm fall in just a few hours, and some isolated areas receiving as much as 40mm.
The warning is active and runs until 11pm tomorrow.
The Met Office has also issued a yellow warning for rain, running from 6am tomorrow until 8am on Thursday (February 19).
