A prolific Isle of Wight shoplifter is due to be sentenced again after stealing power tools worth hundreds of pounds from B&Q.

Benjamin Gothard-Smith, of Avenue Road in Freshwater, appeared before the IW Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, December 30.

The 43-year-old pleaded guilty to a single charge of theft from a shop.

The court heard that on September 16 last year, Gothard-Smith entered the B&Q store in Newport and left without paying for several power tools.

The total value of the stolen items was said to have been £378.

Gothard-Smith is no stranger to the courts, having amassed more than 70 previous convictions.

The bench ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared before passing sentence.

Gothard-Smith was granted unconditional bail and is due to return to the IW Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on February 27.
