Ryde Rowing Club celebrated a successful weekend at the South Coast Rowing Championships Regatta.
The event took place in Plymouth on September 5 and 6, and was hosted by Plymouth Rowing Club on behalf of the West of England Amateur Rowing Association.
The regatta is an annual highlight for the sport, drawing the top competitors from the Hants & Dorset ARA, the Coast ARA, and the West of England ARA for seven championship events, open races, and a junior regatta.
This year, races were held over a straight 1,000m course, with championship races extending to 1,500m.
The event is typically held in river boats, but due to severe weather forecasts, organisers switched to coastal fours for the junior fours events on September 5 and all races on September 6.
Wightlink-sponsored Ryde Rowing Club fielded ten crews and scullers across the two days of competition.
The standout performance for the club on September 5 came from their Boys J16 single sculler, Charlie Watts, who won his final convincingly after finishing second in his heat.
In the Women’s Novice Sculls, Stella Baisley secured a fifth-place finish.
The club's J18 Men’s Four and Women’s Four, featuring Ben Robotham, Joe Bird, Yogi Ashworth, Isaac Gibson, and Harry Watts as cox for the men's, and Eva Gordon, Demi Cranham-Ede, Alexis Owen, and Emily Kellerman with Mai Read coxing for the women's, finished fourth and sixth in their respective finals.
September 6 saw two of the club's representative crews competing in championship events over the longer course.
The Women’s Junior Four, comprising Abi Locke, Fiona Owen, Alexis, and Emily with Ruby Read coxing, narrowly missed out on a win, finishing second by just three feet in the closest race of the day.
The Men’s Junior Senior Four, featuring Charlie, Will Hall, Joe Roberts, and Paddy Kearney with Mai coxing, finished in fourth place.
In the open events, the club's Women’s Open Senior 4+ and Men’s Open Junior-Senior 4+ both secured third place in their finals.
The Men’s Open Novice 4+ finished second in their final, while the Women’s Novice 4+ finished fifth in their heat.
