A second weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for the Isle of Wight — this time by the Met Office.

After intense downpours overnight and around 24 hours after the IW Met Service issued an alert, the national forecaster has now followed suit.

The Met Office warning came into effect at 8.51am this morning.

By this point the Island had already seen 43.66mm of rainfall, which was recorded at the IW Met Service's weather station in Lake.

The Met Office said: "Further spells of rain, heavy at times, through the course of Sunday and overnight into Monday morning, will bring the potential for some difficult travelling conditions and perhaps some localised surface water flooding.

"Through this period, a further 15-20 mm of rain could fall quite widely, with perhaps 30mm in a few locations, this most likely in southwest England.

"Parts of southeast England are less likely to see heavy rain after early afternoon on Sunday."

As previously reported, the IW Met Service warning came into effect at 10pm last night and runs until 6pm today.

Local forecaster Jamie Russell predicted rain fall of up to 40mm.

This morning, he said: "The worst of the rain has now passed to the east with only fairly small amounts expected through the rest of the day.

"Perhaps a further 2-4mm in some parts, in stark contrast to the 30-40mm that we expected and received overnight until 9am today,"

Currently, there are four flood alerts and one flood warning in force for the Island.
