ISLE of Wight police are reminding motorists of the legislation surrounding E-Bikes after seizing a motorised bicycle and reporting its owner.
It comes after officers spotted an illegal E-Bike believed to have been travelling at 30mph without its rider peddling.
Its 'young' owner has subsequently been reported for multiple driving offences and is due in court.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Are you riding an illegal E-Bike?
“This bike may look like a normal bike, but it’s not. It was travelling at 30mph without peddling.
“A legal E-Bike must show either the battery’s voltage or the maximum speed of the bike.
“Its electric motor must have a maximum power output of 250 watts and should not be able to propel the bike when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph.
“Any electric bike that does not meet the rules is classed as a motorcycle or moped and needs to be registered and taxed.
“You’ll need a driving licence and insurance to ride one and you must wear a crash helmet.
“Therefore, usual road laws are applied, and a rider can be prosecuted.
“Do you know anyone riding an illegal E-BIKE or E scrambler? Let us know.
“We would like to know where these riders live and ride these bikes.
“Any information you can provide to us will be helpful.”
