A man found at the bottom of some steps at a multi-storey car park on the Isle of Wight has been seriously injured. 

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service attended the scene and called Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary officers, who arrived at about 1.35pm.

An injured male had been found at the bottom of some stairs in the car park on Pyle Street, Newport.

A police spokesman said the man, in his 40s, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish how he came to be injured," the spokesperson said.

A cordon has been put in place and access to the first floor has been closed off.
