A NEW culinary and entertainment experience inspired by the South African way of enjoying an outdoor barbecue, set in the picturesque grounds of a historic Isle of Wight country house, will open next month.
Braai — which gets its name from the South African word for grill, or barbecue — is set to launch at New Farm, on the Nunwell House estate near Brading, on Saturday, July 20.
Braai is a collective of Nunwell Home Farm, Wight Knuckle Brewery, Wight Whisky and Heron, led by chef Alex Kimber, which have re-imagined a disused cattle shed — transforming it into a weekly social event venue.
'Local and sustainable, from farm to table — and a venue to enjoy it together,' is Braai's simple, straightforward maxim.
Together, Braai aims to showcase the best in local produce and talent in their "concept of a weekend social event, featuring locally-produced food and beverages, with local entertainment".

Guests will be able to sample Nunwell's own meat and locally grown vegetables, cooked over natural wood fire, drinking naturally-crafted beers and whisky, while enjoying picturesque views across the Nunwell estate.
The Oglander family has been custodians of the Nunwell estate's one thousand acres since 1120.
Today, Robert Oglander and his family live on the estate. In his other profession, as a long haul airline pilot, he spends a great deal of time in South Africa and has always dreamed of replicating his love of the Braai 'culture' of barbecues.
"At Braai, our aim is to provide guests with a taste of the Island," said Phil Campo, Heron's operations and events manager.
"Furnished with hay bales, trestle tables and festoon lighting, the former cattle shed will be brought to life and filled with the smell of barbecue smoke, the sound of chatter and cheer, amazing food, drinks and live entertainment."
Braai will open on Friday evenings, all day Saturdays and on Sunday afternoons through until October.
