A man has been tasered and arrested after he threatened police officers with violence at an Isle of Wight park this morning (Tuesday, June 11).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary were alerted to reports of an assault at an address on Ash Road in Pan Estate at around 6.30am.

Upon arrival, a man had left the address that officers wanted to speak to.

He was located by police at Downside Recreation Ground but 'challenged officers with violence', a spokesperson for the force said.

An officer tasered the man, a 32-year-old from Cowes, bringing him under control so he could be arrested.

He was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and common assault.

Sgt Radford of IW Police said: “Thankfully, incidents like this where officers are left with no choice but to use their equipment is not an everyday occurrence on the Island.

“When a taser is used it records several things, not only the discharge time but how long it was used for and the current temperature.”

“The man is currently in custody and will be dealt with in due course.”
