ONE person has died and another was seriously injured following a major crash on a main Isle of Wight road yesterday morning (Saturday), police have confirmed.

The Downs Road at Brading was closed by police following a road traffic incident at around 11.20am.

The collision involved two vehicles; a Hyundai, and a Land Rover which was towing a trailer.

Sadly, the passenger of the Hyundai, a 77-year-old woman from Newport, died at the scene.

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said: "Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"The driver of the Hyundai, a 40-year-old man from Newport, suffered serious injuries and is currently being treated at hospital.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed the Hyundai involved in the collision was a taxi.
