AN APPEAL to spare an Isle of Wight teenager from immediate custody has been successful.

Jayden Dewhurst, who was caught with a craft knife in the middle of a road, was last week handed a 15-week jail term at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

At a previous hearing in April, the 19-year-old, of Hunnyhill, Newport, admitted possession of a knife in a public place, in Newport, on March 18.

On Friday, May 19, magistrates went outside their guidelines and handed Dewhurst a 15-week prison term.

Later that afternoon, Michael McGoldrick, defending, lodged an appeal for his case to be reviewed in the higher court.

Appearing at the Isle of Wight Crown Court today (Thursday), that appeal was successful.

Dewhurst received a four-month jail term, suspended for 24 months, to include 80 hours of unpaid work, a 12-month drug treatment requirement, and 20 rehabilitation days.
