Repairs to a damaged seawall are underway, beach replenishment works completed and a promenade partially reopened at three popular Isle of Wight seafronts.

Aimed at extending the life of the sea defences at Shanklin, the seawall repairs started on the promenade yesterday (Thursday, May 23).

The work comes ahead of the major scheme undertaken by the IW Council, in conjunction with the Environment Agency, over the next five years in the Bay area.

As previously reported by the County Press, the seawall at Totland has been partially reopened following work to clear landslip rubble.

Work is due to start later this month to repair the voiding discovered underneath the seawall on the Colwell side of the landslip.

Meanwhile, at Monks Bay near Ventnor, IW Council contractors have just completed this year’s beach replenishment works, protecting the coastal slopes and reducing the risk of cliff movement in the area.

Back in Ventnor, the Eastern Esplanade reopened on Friday afternoon (May 24) following the completion of major works after a large section collapsed into the sea in November 2022.

In Alum Bay, the new beach steps are open to the public ahead of the summer season.

Cllr Paul Fuller, Cabinet member for coastal protection, said: "The winter storms caused much devastation across the Island, and our teams are working hard to repair the damage and protect the public.

“However, I would urge people to please stay away from damaged areas and out of danger.

"It is brilliant that following ground movement stopping, extensive repairs can be made to reopen these important footpaths.”
