In front of a decent-sized crowd at Camp Road, Freshwater, recently, Adam — who playing in his final season for West Wight Football Club — featured in the match between Robbie Dye's Ringers and Lawts' Legends.

The match was a tribute to Adam, who played more than 700 matches for West Wight and 236 goals, with an honours list as long as your arm, including 11 Island League Division 1 titles and even more cups and other titles, over 29-and-a-half seasons.

Adam began the match playing for the Ringers, but switched shirts later in the game to feature for the Legends.

The Ringers won the match 2-1, played in excellent conditions on a superb pitch.

The Legends took the lead in the first half through a Darren Moore header, but second half goals by Andy Rann and Anthony Tyrell, turned the game around to give the Ringer's victory.

Robbie Dye, a West Wight legend himself, having managed West Wight and Adam for more than ten years, said: "Adam was a midfielder with an absolutely fantastic scoring record.

"Long service is just part of it. It's the high level he's maintained. Adam has been our go-to player for years and years.

"One thing with Adam is there is no ego. He might score a hat-trick one day, but afterwards in the bar, he was just one of the lads."

Former Brading Town manager Steve Lawton, an opponent of Adam's over several years, paid tribute to the 45-year-old.

"In my opinion, Adam is one of the best to have ever played Island League football — and consistently," Steve said.

"He's one of the nicest people I know and I'm pleased so many came along to the match. It just shows exactly what people think of him."

Afterwards, Adam was presented with a shirt signed by all participants and a book of memories.

He said: "To even be considered for a testimonial meant everything. But to then see how many turned out for it was amazing."

Adam also featured in the Isle of Wight Legends v Saints legends match in Cowes on Saturday. Read this week's edition of the County Press for a full report and pictures.
