CITY are mourning the death of former winger Ian Mellor.

Mellor, who died yesterday aged 74, made 49 appearances for the club between 1982 and 1984 and scored five goals.

He had been suffering from amyloidosis, a rare disease which affects the internal organs.

Before joining the Bantams, Mellor played for Manchester City, Norwich and Brighton, where the left winger earned the nickname ‘the Spider’.

He also had spells with Chester, Sheffield Wednesday and Worksop Town as well as a period playing in Hong Kong for Tung Sing.

Mellor signed for City from Wednesday in May 1982 before leaving the club for Hong Kong 18 months later.

His son Neil, the former Liverpool forward, is still seen occasionally at games at Valley Parade in his role as a Sky Sports pundit.

He announced the news yesterday via social media.

Mellor wrote: “My Dad, My Hero, I love you.

'Thank you for everything. 19/02/1950 - 01/05/2024.

'We are all absolutely devastated to have lost my Dad.

'Big thanks to St Ann’s Hospice and all their brilliant staff who helped during those last days as he battled so hard against amyloidosis.'

City posted a tribute last night on X, formerly Twitter.

They said: "Our thoughts are with Ian's friends, family and loved ones at this difficult time."
