Police will be taking no further action in relation to the arrest of a man on suspicion of murder earlier today (Saturday).

The County Press can reveal the murder case has been dropped following the death of a woman, and no inquest is going to be opened into her death at this time.

It is understood the woman, from Cowes, had fallen ill, and was taken to hospital.

The police said this morning that the woman died in hospital and "concerns were raised" over her death, leading to the arrest of the man.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said tonight: "Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 55 year-old woman at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport on Thursday, April 4.

"Earlier today, as part of our investigation, a 51 year-old man from Shanklin was arrested on suspicion of murder and engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship.

"He has now been released on conditional bail until Saturday, July 13, for the offence of coercive controlling behaviour.

"We will be taking no further action in relation to the arrest on suspicion of murder."

The man has been released from police custody.
