Vandals have damaged part of historic Ryde Pavilion, on Ryde Esplanade.

Painted railings around the landmark Grade II Listed buildings have been smashed up and torn away from the seafront property.

Businessman Steve Robson posted on Facebook: "Tonight we have the Oasish Blurd, The No.1 Blur Tribute gig on, which will be going ahead, but with the entrance now at the rear of the building."

He called the vandalism "mindless".

The Pavilion building has housed a bowling alley for more than 30 years and in recent years become Ryde Superbowl.

Before that, however, the building — built in the 1920s — was the Eastern Esplanade Pavilion Theatre and hosted many grand occasions.

The Pavilion was refurbished in the early 1990s to stop it from being knocked down.

Instead, it was turned into an entertainment centre for the seafront, complete with a nightclub.

A plaque marking its refurbishment was unveiled by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in March 1992 while she was on the general election campaign trail.
