The Isle of Wight was hit with severe flooding overnight from Sunday to Monday, when unusually high tides washed in.

The Environment Agency issued five separate flood warnings for the Island's high tide at around midnight.

The five areas with active flood warnings were Freshwater Bay, Cowes, East Cowes, Newport, Wootton and Yarmouth.

Businesses were left cleaning up the debris

Water rushed up Castle Street in East Cowes and Cowes High Street, flooding into many businesses and other premises.

A power cut hit Cowes High Street, to add to the misery. Some areas were knee-deep and some people even attempted to swim down the street. Watch their attempt on our Tiktok, Facebook and Instagram pages.

Water starting receding at around 3am.

Parts of the Isle of Wight's coast saw the second highest tides on record, the Environment Agency confirmed to the County Press.

In Cowes, peak tide levels were just 9cm short of the highest ever recorded there.

At midnight on Monday, levels reached 2.64 mAOD (meters above ordnance datum).

This was second only to tides recorded in the coastal town on February, 14, when levels were at 2.73 mAOD.

Bembridge saw the Island's highest tides on the night and potentially the town's highest on record, with levels reaching 3.04 mAOD.
