Two people have been rescued after being stuck in mud near Priory Bay on the Isle of Wight this lunchtime (Friday, March 15).

Emergency teams were alerted to reports that a man and a woman were stuck in mud off of Duver Road in St Helens. 

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service crews from Newport and Ryde were called to the scene shortly before midday.

Working alongside Coastguard teams, firefighters used mud paths to reach and rescue the casualties, who were passed into the care of ambulance paramedics.

Firefighters began to leave the scene and return to their stations at 1.44pm.

HM Coastguard said it is responding to reports of people stuck in mud in the Priory Bay area.

A spokesperson said: "Alerted at around 11.20am, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor and lifeboats from Bembridge RNLI have been sent to the scene."
