A man has been detained following an emergency response to 'suspected explosive material' at a property on the Isle of Wight yesterday (Thursday, March 7).

Police arrived at an address on Mary Rose Avenue in Wootton shortly after 1pm yesterday, while other teams attended a property on Prospect Road in Newport.

Officers attended alongside the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to access suspected explosive material at the Wootton address and ensure the safety of nearby residents.

A small quantity of suspicious material has been seized, a police spokesperson has confirmed.

A man in his 20s has been detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Local neighbourhood officers will be in the area today (Friday, March 8) carrying out 'reassurance patrols'.

Residents are encouraged to come to and speak to them if they have any questions or concerns. 

Meanwhile, at Prospect Road in Newport, Royal Navy bomb disposal experts could be seen wearing gloves and carrying plastic evidence bags while entering and exiting the property yesterday.
